Located four miles south east of Llandeilo in Carmarthenshire, Wales, Carreg Cennen Castle stands on a high rocky outcrop overlooking the River Cennen.
Despite the romantic ruins commanding the limestone crag today, Roman coins and prehistoric skeletons have been discovered here. It was used in skirmishes between the English and Welsh, as well as in the War of the Roses, which led to its demolition in the 1460s. Despite this, the remains of the fortress are substantial and their former strength obvious.
You can enjoy the castle from the most rewarding vantage point on foot. Once inside, the north-east tower gives spectacular views to Black Mountain on a clear day – a natural monolith framed by arrow slits. A hike up a mountain and watching the sunset over the valleys would be the perfect way to spend your day.
